The Canadian Kitchen Cabinet Association has a mixed reaction to the recent developments in the trade war. While they appreciate U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to delay the increase in tariffs on furniture, cabinets, and vanities, the industry is still facing significant challenges.
In October, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on these products, which dealt a severe blow to the sector. Although he paused a further increase to 30% for upholstered furniture and a staggering 50% for cabinets and vanities, the damage has already been done.
"The 50% would have been a disaster, but the 25% is still a huge burden," said Luke Elias, Vice President of the Association. "It's like trying to recover from a serious injury; it takes time and effort."
The kitchen cabinet manufacturing industry is a vital part of Canada's economy, generating $4.7 billion annually. Elias explained that the sector exports a significant portion of its products, valued at around $600 million, to the U.S. market. With Trump's tariffs, the industry is facing a double whammy, as it is already struggling due to a soft Canadian housing market.
Manitoba-based Elias Woodwork, employing over 400 people, is a prime example. The company exports 80% of its products to the U.S., utilizing American materials like hardwood from the Appalachians. Ralph Fehr, the company's president, emphasized the impact of the 25% tariff, stating that a 50% duty would have been catastrophic.
"Who would pay double for Canadian-made products?" Fehr asked. "It's a tough sell, and we're doing our best to navigate these challenging times."
The industry is not only facing financial difficulties but also job losses. Since the implementation of Trump's tariffs in October, several companies have had to lay off employees. Elias, who is not affiliated with Elias Woodwork, highlighted the critical situation, stating, "We're in a dire situation. It's a fight for survival."
As the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) comes up for review, the Canadian Kitchen Cabinet Association is urging Ottawa not to overlook their industry. They want the federal government to extend procurement policies and taxpayer incentives to support the building industry at all levels.
"We need a level playing field," Elias said. "The cheap imports from Asia, brought in at below market value, are undermining our industry."
The American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance has accused Canada of acting as a conduit for Chinese products to enter the U.S. market, circumventing anti-dumping and countervailing duty orders imposed by the U.S. Commerce Department on cabinets from China in 2020.
"It's a complex issue," said Luke Meisner, counsel for the Alliance. "China found a way to keep its products in the U.S. market, and we need to address this."
Trump justifies the tariffs as a way to "bolster American industry and protect national security." However, the Canadian industry feels the impact of these measures, and they are hoping for a resolution during the CUSMA negotiations.
"We're a small industry, but we're an essential one," Elias concluded. "We want to be part of the solution, and we need support to weather this storm."
As the review process begins, the future of the kitchen cabinet industry hangs in the balance, and the outcome could have a significant impact on thousands of Canadian jobs.
