A charming piece of history is about to close its doors, and it's a real shame! The Old Rectory B&B in King's Lynn, once a beacon of comfort, is transforming into a private residence. This news comes to us courtesy of our subscriber partnership with USA Today, and while it's a story from our American colleagues, it's certainly one that resonates with anyone who appreciates a good B&B.
The owner, Clive Faulkner, has received the green light to convert the former rectory. His decision stems from a simple yet impactful reason: retirement. But here's where it gets controversial... the business, located on Goodwins Road, is no longer sustainable.
The application cited a decline in revenue, largely due to the evolving landscape around it. The introduction of larger hotels has created a tough environment for smaller establishments.
The Old Rectory, built in 1842, offered a taste of Georgian elegance, with en-suite rooms available from around £80 a night. Guests clearly loved their stays, as reflected in its impressive 4.3 out of 5 rating on Tripadvisor. One reviewer even gushed, "The Hotel was quiet, beautiful so clean and peaceful. Loved our stay here."
