SA Rugby's New Coaching Forum: Ending the Bulls Backlash? | Springboks Collaboration Explained (2026)

SA Rugby is shaking things up! Following a wave of criticism, they're launching a 'national coaching forum' to bridge the gap between Springboks coaches and provincial unions. But why the sudden shift? Let's dive in.

This move comes in response to the controversy surrounding the Bulls, a Pretoria-based team, after they enlisted the help of four national team coaches due to a rough start to their season. Felix Jones, Duane Vermeulen, Jerry Flannery, and Andy Edwards were brought in to assist head coach Johan Ackermann after he had to let go of two of his coaches, Andries Bekker and Chris Rossouw.

In an official statement, SA Rugby expressed their support for Rassie Erasmus's decision to offer assistance, also stating that other teams are welcome to request similar collaborations. The goal? To formalize and enhance the existing relationships between coaches, who already coordinate regarding the schedules of their Springboks – or Players of National Interest (PONI). SA Rugby hopes this will strengthen the game across all levels.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Mark Alexander, the president of SA Rugby, emphasized that this isn't about creating a uniform style of play. Instead, it's about fostering support and shared learning while respecting each union's independence. He highlights that this approach is already common in other successful rugby nations.

The initial backlash stemmed from the Bulls' announcement of the Springboks' assistance. Ackermann defended the collaboration, explaining that he simply sought fresh perspectives on defensive strategies. He clarified that he didn't expect the Springboks coaches to dictate game plans, but rather to offer insights and alignment.

He explained, "I said [to Rassie Erasmus]: ‘You’ve always made your team of coaches available, and I’d love it if someone like [coach] Jerry Flannery could come in and look at our defensive systems and share some ideas’."

"I don’t expect the Bok coaches to put a plan together on how to win – that is my job as head coach."

"You can’t expect the Bok coaches, one of whom lives in Ireland, to be at Loftus every week. I’d be happy if they rotated, which is where the idea of involving Duane Vermeulen and Felix Jones came in."

"I would never ask Rassie for game-plans, merely a careful eye on what we are doing. This is about alignment and perspective, not about outsourcing our coaching."

What do you think? Is this a positive step for South African rugby, or does it risk blurring the lines between club and country? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
