Mercedes P2 in 2025 Season: Wolff Calls Abu Dhabi 'Mediocre' but Pleases with Final Standings (2026)

Toto Wolff's Unfiltered Thoughts on Mercedes' Abu Dhabi Performance

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff isn't holding back his emotions as he reflects on the team's performance in Abu Dhabi. Despite securing second place in the Teams' Championship, Wolff's unfiltered assessment paints a picture of a team leader who's not entirely satisfied.

The Silver Arrows finished 18 points ahead of Red Bull, but Wolff's choice of words, 'mediocre,' reveals a deeper frustration. George Russell's race was characterized by a slow start due to wheelspin, which set the tone for a challenging afternoon. Despite his efforts, Russell couldn't challenge for a podium finish, finishing behind Charles Leclerc.

Kimi Antonelli's race was even more frustrating, ending in 15th place, well out of the points. Wolff acknowledges Russell's successful one-stop strategy, but the overall performance fell short of expectations.

'It was a lonely one for George, who wasn't threatened from behind but lacked the pace of the front four cars,' Wolff explained. 'Kimi gave it his all from a difficult starting position, but our car speed didn't allow him to regain points.'

While Wolff acknowledges the team's achievement of securing P2 in the Constructors', he's clear about their ultimate goals. 'It's not the way we wanted to end the year, but we can be pleased with the result. Our aim has been to secure a strong position since the midpoint of the season.'

McLaren's dominance in the Championship, with 833 points to Mercedes' 469, highlights the team's struggle for a Constructors' crown since 2021. Wolff remains optimistic, stating, 'We hope to prove ourselves worthy of a world title fight next year.'

Despite the challenges, Wolff highlights positive aspects, including Russell's two wins and Antonelli's impressive rookie performances. However, the looming regulations change for 2026 leaves the team's future uncertain.

As Mercedes navigates the transition, Wolff's honest assessment serves as a reminder that the team's success is far from guaranteed. The question remains: Can Mercedes reclaim their glory in the next era of Formula 1?
