Inside Doha Air Alerts: Ex-Northamptonshire Cricketer's Routine Under Threats (2026)

Former Northamptonshire cricketer Mal Loye is adapting to life under air alerts in Doha, Qatar. In an interview with Annabel Amos on BBC Radio Northampton, Loye shared his experience of living through recent missile interceptions and explosions, which have become a regular occurrence in the city. Despite the initial unease, he's finding a strange comfort in the routine, describing it as 'eerie' but 'weirdly' becoming part of his daily life.

Loye, who coaches the Qatar national cricket team, has been in Doha for three days, witnessing the escalating tensions in the Middle East. He lives in a high-rise area, close to the American airbase, and has been advised to stay indoors due to the risk of shrapnel. Loye is currently awaiting information on potential evacuation options, as airspace restrictions limit his ability to leave the country.

The UK government is reportedly considering plans to evacuate British nationals if airspace remains closed. Meanwhile, flight disruptions have stranded families, including Claire from Braunston, Northamptonshire, who was unable to return to the UK with her husband and two children. Claire's mother passed away from motor neurone disease on February 7th, and the family's plans for her funeral were complicated by the travel restrictions. Claire expressed her distress at the thought of her sister attending the funeral without her.

In Dubai, several hotels and buildings have been struck by missiles, and the city's airport has also been affected. Claire and her family were staying at the Five Palm Jumeirah when they experienced the intercepted missiles overhead. She spent approximately £2,000 on additional flights in an attempt to return home in time, highlighting the challenges faced by those caught in the crossfire of regional conflicts.
