Drivers in the northwest are grappling with challenging driving conditions following the implementation of a yellow weather warning for snow and ice that took effect late Thursday night. This weather alert has resulted in multiple road closures and several accidents, making travel particularly hazardous.
Reports indicate that various incidents have occurred on key routes such as the M56 eastbound, close to Princess Parkway, as well as on the M60 and M602 motorways. Specifically, two lanes on the M56 eastbound near Junction 3 were shut down due to a collision, creating significant traffic delays extending back to Manchester Airport, a major hub for travelers.
In addition to these issues, further disruptions are expected, particularly on the A537 Cat and Fiddle Road, which is currently closed between Bull Hill Lane in Macclesfield and the A54 in Buxton because of heavy snowfall. The Met Office has advised travelers to plan for additional travel time due to these adverse conditions.
Earlier, the M60 anti-clockwise was also forced to close between Junctions 1 and 27, as National Highways North West cited difficult driving conditions stemming from the overnight snowfall.
The yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office covers extensive regions across England, Northern Ireland, and Wales, starting at midnight and remaining effective until midday Friday. Areas such as Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Greater Manchester, Halton, and Warrington are among those likely to experience severe weather effects.
A spokesperson for the Met Office cautioned that "blizzard conditions" are anticipated in northern Scotland, where accumulations could reach up to 40 centimeters of snow. They highlighted that this wintry weather poses risks for travel, potentially resulting in delays and dangerous driving situations.
"There may be the formation of ice due to rainfall hitting frozen surfaces, and icy patches will develop quickly as sleet and snow begin to clear," the Met Office warned.
Looking ahead, it seems that this cold weather spell is expected to linger through the weekend and possibly into the following week, with additional warnings likely as temperatures remain significantly below average and snow showers continue to occur.
