Iconic Developments Unfolding at Bulgari
Imagine a world where the past meets the present, and where history is not just remembered but reimagined. This is precisely what Mary Katrantzou, Bulgari’s inaugural creative director for leather goods and accessories, has been accomplishing over the last two years. Shortly after stepping into her role, she embarked on an extensive exploration of the brand’s archives, delving into its vibrant history that traces back to its inception by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari in 1884. This journey inspired her to breathe new life into some of Bulgari’s most celebrated jewelry designs, culminating in her debut collection of minaudières aptly named "Icons" (https://www.bulgari.com/en-int/bags-and-accessories/bvlgari-icons).
The collection features five exclusive bags, each available in two distinct sizes, which skillfully capture Bulgari’s hallmark motifs. These include the Monete coin, influenced by ancient Greek and Roman art; the serpent-like Serpenti, famously worn by Elizabeth Taylor; the elegantly crafted Tubogas; the fan-shaped Divas’ Dream; and the circular Bulgari Bulgari adorned with its iconic logo. Katrantzou shares her vision: “My research evolved into an exploration of how a piece of jewelry can transform into a functional accessory, while an accessory can, in turn, feel like a precious jewel in your hand.”
Each bag is not only a work of art but is also embellished with exquisite gems such as amethyst, tiger’s-eye, and malachite. Furthermore, they draw inspiration from remarkable women: fashion and film icon Isabella Rossellini, celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, supermodel Linda Evangelista, actress Kim Ji-won, and innovative architect Sumayya Vally. Katrantzou encouraged these women to share their personal insights through essays exploring themes of creativity, legacy, and their life lessons, which have been beautifully printed as miniature volumes designed to fit snugly within the bags.
Rossellini, whose connections to the Bulgari family run deep through her parents—actress Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini—reflected on her journey back to academia in her 60s, pursuing a master’s degree in animal behavior and conservation. She emphasizes that being labeled an icon is not a career choice but a title bestowed upon you. "It means that there’s something more intriguing in your life than just your profession," she remarks. "While I am indeed an actress and a model, my career has been filled with numerous explorations and collaborations that have enriched my narrative."
For Katrantzou, the Icons collection symbolizes a blend of evolution and heritage, where these luxurious items transform into vessels of knowledge. "My goal was to collaborate with women who represent cultural significance, creative bravery, and a profound sense of legacy," she notes. "These are women recognized as guardians of culture."
In a bold move, Katrantzou also intentionally crafted the bags in dimensions that do not accommodate a mobile phone. "This choice itself makes a cultural statement," she asserts.
