Botswana's economy is expected to shrink by nearly 1% in 2025, primarily due to the struggling diamond sector. This forecast, shared by Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe, highlights a concerning trend in the country's economic outlook. The diamond industry, a cornerstone of Botswana's economy, has been facing a prolonged downturn, impacting national revenues and foreign exchange receipts. Typically, diamonds contribute around one-third of the country's revenues and three-quarters of its foreign exchange, making this sector's performance critical to the nation's financial health. The government's initial hope for a 3.3% GDP expansion this year, following a 3% contraction in 2023, has been significantly revised downward. By mid-year, projections showed almost no growth, indicating a persistent and challenging economic environment. The finance minister emphasized the fragile macroeconomic outlook for 2025, with a projected GDP contraction of 0.9%, reflecting the ongoing weakness in the diamond sector. This situation has led to mounting debt risks, as increased borrowing is necessary to address fiscal imbalances, resulting in a higher debt trajectory. To address these challenges, the government has implemented austerity measures, such as restricting overtime allowances for civil servants and moratoriums on domestic and foreign travel. Further austerity measures are expected to be announced in next year's budget speech, aiming to redirect funds towards areas that can foster future growth.
