Barbara Bush: From Global Health to NBA Dream Job (2026)

As the excitement builds for the upcoming NBA All-Star Game at Intuit Dome, one person is particularly thrilled: Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush and the NBA's vice president of social impact. She has truly found what she describes as her "dream job" and is reveling in every aspect of it.

"Growing up in Dallas, I played basketball until the fifth grade and followed the Mavericks closely. After moving to Austin, my focus shifted to the University of Texas," she reminisced. "I never imagined a career in basketball; my professional background was largely in global health with nonprofit organizations. However, during the COVID pandemic, I began to notice how the NBA utilized its arenas for vaccination sites and voting locations, which allowed for safe social distancing."

While working with her foundation, Bush found herself attending meetings with NBA executives and exploring potential collaborations. "My interest grew as I learned more about their initiatives. One day, I casually mentioned that if there was ever an opening, I would love to be considered for a role. A year later, that opportunity arose, and I applied. Now, I've been part of the NBA for approximately three years."

In 2023, Bush was elevated to her current role, where she collaborates with the Los Angeles Clippers. She is overseeing this year's All-Star youth and development programs, along with various social impact initiatives. This includes Thursday's dedication of the NBA Cares State Farm Assist Tracker Legacy Project, which honors the YMCA’s 175th anniversary at the Weingart YMCA Wellness & Aquatic Center in South L.A.

"The YMCA has been a longstanding partner of the Clippers, and we have a deep connection with them because our sport originated in a YMCA, making it a foundational part of the NBA's history," Bush noted. "Alongside the National Basketball Players Association and the Clippers, we are revitalizing facilities that serve young people, including a STEM lab, a teen center, and a basketball court."

On Thursday evening, seven entrepreneurs based in L.A. will have the opportunity to present their businesses to a panel of celebrity judges in the All-Star Pitch Competition at the Kia Forum, competing for $200,000 in prizes. The judges include actress Issa Rae, marketing executive Bozoma Saint John, private equity partners Will Bumpus and Ted Oberwager, and Ann Miller, Nike’s executive vice president of global sports marketing.

"This competition follows a 'Shark Tank' format. We received applications from 200 companies, and these seven finalists will have the chance to pitch their ideas to a renowned panel of judges. I imagine they’ll be feeling quite nervous," Bush explained. "It’s incredibly uplifting to witness these entrepreneurs bravely share their innovative ventures in front of an audience."

On Friday morning, the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Day will welcome 1,000 local youths from the Beyond the Bell and Woodcraft Rangers programs to participate in clinics that teach basketball fundamentals.

Additionally, the 18th annual NBA Cares Day of Service is scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Convention Center, where 500 volunteers will collaborate with Habitat for Humanity to construct home structures and assemble essential kits for families in need through Baby2Baby.

Throughout the weekend, the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp at the Lakers’ practice facility in El Segundo will gather elite high school-age prospects from continents around the globe, including Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Participants will engage in shooting competitions, life-skills seminars, and five-on-five games led by current and former NBA players and coaches.

"One unique aspect of this year’s All-Star Game is the reimagined format: it's now USA vs. the World, reflecting the international diversity of our players," Bush shared. "With NBC also covering the Olympics, we believe this new format will create a compelling viewing experience."

Bush is particularly enthusiastic about the NBA Total Health All-Star Walk scheduled for Sunday morning—a two-mile journey in Inglewood.

"We’re partnering with Girltrek, an outstanding nonprofit that promotes walking as a means to improve health," she said. "We anticipate around 1,500 participants, and it's open to the public. NBA and WNBA legends will join us, and Evernorth Health Services will provide biometric screenings and skin cancer checks to ensure everyone stays healthy before heading to the game."

Bush acknowledged the Clippers’ significant involvement in orchestrating the NBA's events for the weekend and commended the franchise for its commitment to community outreach.

"What I cherish about my role is that I can still work on health and social justice initiatives but from a fresh perspective," she emphasized. "With a global audience tuning in, we want to ensure we leave a positive impact on the community that lasts well beyond our visit."
